Bali by Bicycle

Many companies are now offering cycling tours on Bali and they will pick you up from your villa and drop you off near the top of one of the many volcanic mountains so your journey will be largely effortless or very low impact.

Lunch time will be spent in some idyllic location with a gourmet picnic spread beneath a mighty Banyan tree or perhaps in the shade of a convenient cliff-face. Many tour companies have purpose-built picnic areas with Bale's, traditional wooden platforms with thatched roofs, and magnificent views.

To experience Bali by bicycle is to become immersed in the environment of Bali. Colourful ceremonies, vibrant markets and teeming villages are delightful punctuation in the myriad greens of the Balinese landscape. Tumbling rice terraces, fed by an intricate and highly complex system of dams and sluices, in all stages of growth from flooded for new seedlings, to dry and harvested attest to Bali's year-round growing season. You will see the full cycle of agricultural activity from planting rice seedlings to cutting and threshing the mature rice stems. Ducks will parade for you and sometimes you may be greeted with huge flocks of exotic tropical birds.

Many tours are planned to include one or more of Bali's sacred temple sites - a million miles away from the concerns of Bali villa rental in the south of the island. Hidden down leafy lanes, sometimes these are many hundreds of years old and the earliest are over a thousand. Ancient sites with continuity of purpose creating a palpable air of the sacred. Some tours provide their guests an opportunity to study Balinese Hindu culture, others explain the architecture while others simply visit temples as a magnificent backdrop for lunch!

Often, Bali villa rental companies will arrange group tours as part of a holiday or villa rental package or have special arrangements with a bicycle tour company to provide excursions at a discount. However, there are many companies to choose from so it pays to select the tour which suits you and your party by browsing the plethora of brochures found outside those in the information pack which comes with your Bali villa.

Cycles are usually well maintained, new model, mountain bikes and are suitable for all ages from teens to adults. Most routes are planned to minimise the effort required to keep up a decent pace although frequent stops for any reason at all, including meeting locals, examining interesting scenery and observing wildlife. Most tours are conducted daily and your guide will have a deep understanding of the local culture and history. Cycling through Bali can be one of the most enjoyable experiences during your holiday and we encourage you to enjoy this most serene of sightseeing experiences first-hand!
