Moving to St Kitts? Pack This!

So...it's official!

You're moving to St. Kitts for work or school.

Now what? You need to pack! But....what?

When I was packing to move here 12 years ago, I had no clue what to pack. I didn't know what I would find in the stores here. No one could give me any suggestions. I ended up packing a bunch of stuff I didn't really need, and left out things I wish I had brought. So I've put together this list of things I think could be helpful for you. This list is based on my personal experience, and what I have found available here. Your personal needs may vary, but I think it will put you on the right track.

First, I have to say, there is a lot more available here now than when I first moved to island. The number of stores and the variety of goods for sale has increased ten-fold. When I first moved here, even buying new clothes required a trip to St. Martin. Now, there are many stores offering the latest fashions. But, there are still things that are hard to come by, and should be brought with you if possible.

Very few goods are actually produced in St. Kitts. Which means that most of what you find in stores is imported. This increases the cost of goods by a large percentage. Not only the cost of importing the goods, but the duty and VAT tax can add significantly to the price you pay in the stores. On average, you can expect to pay three times more for something you buy here, as opposed to purchasing the same item in the US.

If you have need of specialized items for work or school you should bring them with you. Things like scrubs, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, scientific calculators should all be purchased and brought with you. If you have devices that have specialized battery requirements, bring back-up batteries. Bringing regular batteries is a good plan as well. They are very expensive here. Stock up on the most common sizes of batteries, you'll need them.

St. Kitts electrical system is a 220volt system. Most of the modern housing here has transformers that allow you to use your 110 appliances. Strangely, however most of the 110 appliances seem to run a little bit faster or hotter with the transformed current than they do with a standard 110 outlet. Our alarm clocks seem to gain time. In the course of 6 months our clocks can end up running 20 minutes fast. This means small appliances tend to burn up faster. If you have room, packing an extra coffee maker, hair dryer, blender or other small appliances will save you headaches. Those things are available here, but at three times the cost and with limited choices...well you get the picture.

Small fans are very expensive here. A box fan in America can be purchased for $10. Here, that same fan could cost you between EC$150-200. With the heat here, a fan is a necessity. Bring extra, they too are subject to burning out due to the current.

Speaking of current problems, another problem we have is frequent power outages. These can destroy electronics with extended brown-outs. A battery backup for your computer is essential. This will help to protect your computer during power surges and dips in power. Your computer will thank you with tons more great service!

The majority of cosmetics on store shelves here are for persons of African decent. I have curly hair so the hair care products are not much of a problem for me. My tan just doesn't match up to an African complexion though, so finding make-up is near impossible. Thanks to a good friend, I can have it brought in. If you wear make-up, or have a favorite hair care product (especially a hair coloring), that you don't feel you can live without, pack extra. Prescription medications may or may not be available here. If it is an older medication you'll be able to get it, and probably cheaper than what you paid back home. If it's a newer medication, it may be difficult to fill the prescription here. One of my children required a medication for ADD. I don't think it is available here even now (10 years later). We had a very difficult time importing his medication, but thanks to a friend of ours who was a doctor it was do-able. If you are on a prescription medication you may want to check on the availability and stock up accordingly.

If you are bringing a car in from the States or Canada you may want to stock up on small parts. Rubber items have a tendency to decompose rapidly in the salt air. Having a fan belt in stock can save you a lot of headaches. If you take your car in to be serviced here, and they don't have the part, it can be 6 weeks or longer until they can import the part to fix your vehicle.

I hope I haven't made it sound all "doom and gloom". There are a lot of things available here. I'm only relating my personal experience. There are also several things you don't need to pack. Sweaters and jackets have been pretty much useless here. I originally brought 5 pair of jeans with me. I don't think I've ever worn them. Many people think they need to stock up on their favorite liquor or cigarettes when they come. Don't. Those are the two cheapest things on St. Kitts. Cheaper than you will pay in the States or Canada for sure. If you are a smoker you may want to bring lighters though, they're not so easy to find. Oh! And you can leave the snow shovel home... Definitely! Although...they aren't bad for building sand castles!

Cultural Background for Learning Spanish in Buenos Aires: Argentine History Part IV of IV

The most recent period to examine when considering the cultural background of Argentina is the period that began around 1880 and continues to this day. If you gain an understanding of this more modern period of history, it will help you to have more of an appreciation for the entire region when you attend Spanish immersion school in Buenos Aires. While many people who learn Spanish in Argentina know little about the region's history, if you take the time to learn more it will give your entire experience added depth.

Some important milestones took place in the late part of the 19th century. For example, Argentina and Chile's border disputes resolved through a series of treaties. However, the Long Depression set back Argentina's quickly growing economy. The country's GDP fell quickly by 11% just between 1890-1891 alone.

The next major incident concerning Argentine politics occurred when radicals began to control the government. In the election that took place in 1916 only 745,000 people were allowed to vote even though the population was 7.5 million. In 1918 there was a student movement that began at the University of Cordoba. This turned into the University Reform that actually ended up spreading throughout South America.

Due to the Radicals, Argentina remained neutral during WW1. They ended up even exporting goods and issuing credit to Europe. In 1922, the radical leadership ended when an aristocrat named Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear defeated Yrigoyen. There was a great deal of left-wing activism in the 1920's.

The years between 1930-1943 are considered the Infamous Decade. While Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world in 1929, the Crash of 1929 and Depression ended all of this. Part of the reason this time period was called the Infamous Decade is that there was fraud in elections, and corruption was rampant in the government.

The Revolution of 43 occurred from 1943-1946. During these years, the G.O.U. Grupo de Oficiales Unidos demanded that President Catillo designed. Many say that this was the end of the Infamous Decade. One of the members of the GOU Ramirez took power and stopped supporting the axis powers.

Many are familiar with Juan Peron who became president and started peronism. His wife Eva Peron is also very familiar, especially due to the movie and musical Evita. Juan Peron started a foreign policy that was isolationist and expanded government spending- leading to inflation. He was deposed by the Catholic Church in 1955 and went into exile.

More recently, in 1966-1973, the Revolucion Argentina took place. The goal was to start a new political and social order that opposed democracy that was too liberal as well as communism. As a result, the military took on a stronger role. Peron returned to power in 1973. People hoped that this change would calm things down, as the left was starting up various underground movements. However, Peron's return only created violence between left-wing and right-wing peronism.

Since about 1983, Argentina has returned to democracy. Currently, President Kirchner is in office and the economy has strongly rebounded under his control. Another piece of good news is under the Kirchner administration, the foreign debt of the country has been restructured.

Grand Canyon: The Most Common Mistakes Made by Hikers

My wife Wendy and I have been hiking in the Grand Canyon for a little under 25 years. We have stepped off both Rims hundreds of times and as of the writing this article (Fall 2011) have just under (40) Rim2Rims2Rims - several of them both ways, non-stop. We live at the South Rim in the Grand Canyon Village and hike or backpack into the Canyon 3-4 times a week. We are not Park Rangers, but do consider ourselves experts when hiking into the Grand Canyon. Quite often we see folks making mistakes, one mistake is usually okay, 2 or 3 combined mistakes can easily become a disaster. However, in this extreme environment even one mistake is enough to be fatal.

According to recent Grand Canyon National Park statistics posted in the Backcountry Office. 86% of the fatalities in the Grand Canyon are male, 47% are between the ages of 40-59. 38% of the fatalities happen on Bright Angel Trail in which 49% are heat caused and 42% are a cardiac event. These are folks that should know better, but fail to recognize warning signs well enough in advance to correct the problem.

HYDRATION
The byline is " Hydrate or Die!!". If you are hiking more than a half mile down the trail, you should have a liter of water with you. If you are planning to travel more than one and a half miles, you should be utilizing a hydration bladder. A trip to Indian Gardens on the Bright Angel Trail (4.5 miles one way) or Skeleton Point on the South Kaibab Trail (3 miles one way), even during the winter, you should have at least three liters of water available each way...double that during the warmer months. You should be sipping water all the time, do not wait until you're thirsty to drink. That is why a hydration bladder is highly recommended.

On a daily basis during the summer at least half the hikers we see on the trail are not carrying enough water. We see folks literally skipping down BA Trail with a half liter water bottle in their hand without a care in the world. A couple hours later we see them attempting to go back up the trail in very rough shape. This is why the GCNP utilizes PSAR - Preventative Search and Rescue Rangers, usually strategically stationed along the main trails. They will stop you and turn you around if you are not carrying enough water during the warmer months.

OUTERWEAR
The Grand Canyon offers perhaps the best people watching in the world....better than any Wal-Mart. The costumes that folks adorn themselves with for an outdoor hiking experience is simply amazing!! I have watched people hiking downhill dressed all in black with a black hat when it is 130 degrees in the sun at the Colorado River. They seem more concerned about making a fashion statement than their own personal well being.

During the summer, you should only be hiking in the cooler hours of the morning. You should be wearing some type of light nylon shorts that are breathable, a short sleeve COTTON tee-shirt in a light color, white is preferred. You should have on a lightweight hat in a light color. A bandana is highly recommended. You do not want to wear a wick dry nylon top, you will boil in it. You need to wear a cotton top so that the sweat will flow freely into the shirt and assist your body in the cooling process. During the winter, you need to be wearing layers that will easily peel off. The cooler times of the year is when you want to be wearing a wick dry top, with an extra fleece or wick dry outerlayer. Nylon pants that convert to shorts are an added bonus. Again, a bandana is highly recommended.

POLE LENGTH
This is one of my pet peeves and I stop several folks on the trail heading downhill every time I hike off the Rim. When traveling downhill, your pole length needs to be shorter. Quite a few folks on the trail actually have their wrist higher than their elbows - ouch!! (This will give you a serious case of tennis elbow.) I prefer to keep my pole(s) a couple inches below my elbow. This allows the hiker to reach down and take the pressure off of your knees by distributing weight onto the pole(s). I also only use one pole going downhill, on maintained trails such as the Kaibab or Bright Angel, this is not such a big deal. However on non-maintained trails such as Hermits, Grandview or Tanner it is best to use one pole. The reasoning is that you will be switching that pole from one hand to the other almost constantly as you reach, pull and grab with your free hand.

PHYSICAL ABILITY
I recently completed another Rim2Rim2Rim with 20 of my friends of all different levels of ability. My one friend from Indiana had never done any extreme hiking before. He trained for two years and did a fantastic job completing the hike in 19 hours. Two years of training might seem like going a bit over the top for one hike, but he has already booked for next year and having completed the circuit once already, he will no doubt knock off a couple hours on his time.

If you are going to hike more than a couple miles into the Canyon I strongly recommend that you begin training 4-6 weeks in advance. I recommend hiking 5 miles a day every other day and gradually working up to the steepest possible incline. If you must work out in a gym, forgo the elliptical trainer for a stair stepper. Remember going downhill is optional, going uphill is mandatory.

ACCLIMATIZATION
The South Rim averages around 7000' and the North Rim averages around 8000'. Unless you live in the mountains above 5000' you are going to have issues with altitude. The best way to combat altitude issues is to acclimatize properly. I have done extensive mountaineering in the Andes above 20,000'. We always figure after 3 days you're 70% acclimatized and after 10 days you're 100% acclimatized. So, I would recommend spending at least two nights sleeping at higher altitude prior to doing any serious hiking in the Canyon.

In addition, there are a few tips that are well known in mountaineering circles. First off, due to the higher elevation and the dryer conditions you need to double the intake of water. Energy drinks and Goo packets are okay, but nothing beats drinking large amounts of good old fashioned water. Another really good tip is to exhale through pursed lips. This tends to create more oxygen in the bloodstream which will make your uphill battle easier. Finally, if the going is really tough, you can always utilize a "rest step". A rest step is only used when going up steep terrain. You are just simply locking your uphill knee in place for a fraction of a second once you complete the uphill step. This will allow all of your weight to balance on your skeletal system rather than being in constant motion. If you have ever watched a Sherpa going up a large Himalayan peak you will see that they have perfected this technique. Sherpa's rest their way to the summit.

MENTAL ATTITUDE
My wife Wendy considers this to be the top priority other than water. Hiking in the Grand Canyon can be a long and arduous undertaking. Quite often hikers are struggling uphill for hours and tend to lose focus. When they lose focus their pace fluctuates wildly...they speed up and slow down, resting at every switchback. You need to pick a pace in which you're comfortable, no matter how slow and maintain a constant speed. This is much better for you than constantly taking a break.

Mountaineers have something called "summit fever". This is when you're focusing on attaining the summit and are able to block out some of the pain from going up steep inclines for hours on end. It's similar to a "second wind" that marathon runners look forward too. In the Grand Canyon especially, you want to finish strong. If you're lackadaisical and lose focus, the Canyon will eat you up and you will be shattered resting at every switchback.

Keeping a strong mental attitude works hand in hand with your abilities. If you overestimate your ability, it will be difficult to maintain the proper mental attitude. If you're comfortable with your progress and can maintain a steady focused pace you will breeze up the Canyon wall and before you know it will be standing on one of the Rims.

5 Myths About the Inca Trail Uncovered

Trekking the Inca Trail is on the bucket list for many adventure travellers and quite rightly so, as it is a breath-taking trek following ancient Incan footpaths to the magical Machu Picchu ruins. There are many myths and untruths written about the trek, this article seeks to dispel these and provide some realistic advice for those planning their Inca Trail Holiday.

1) The Inca Trail is over-crowded and you can't move for other travellers

I have read this statement so many times, in various guide books and blogs, so by the time I came to do the trek myself, I expected to be fighting for space on the paths. I trekked in June, which is right in the middle of the peak season and there were times during the 2nd and 3rd days, when I barely saw another trekker. Spaces on the trail are now limited to 500 people per day, which includes about 300 porters, who all set off early each morning, so actually it is quite possible to find peace and quiet whilst trekking.

The campsites on the trail are, admittedly, busier, especially on the final night when everyone camps as close to Machu Picchu as possible. But by this time your focus will be on reaching the Sun Gate the next morning (and nursing your sore legs) so the lines of tents shouldn't bother you too much.

2) The altitude makes trekking only possible for the super fit

It is true that the hardest part of trekking the Inca Trail is the altitude. Many people fly in to the city of Cusco to start the trek and at an altitude of 3,500m, it can take a few days to acclimatise. Most people suffer from altitude sickness to some extent, with the most common symptoms including headaches, nausea, breathlessness, dizziness and loss of appetite. These tend to settle down after 36 hours. The best advice is to drink plenty of fluids, rest and don't exert yourself for the first day or two.

Once out trekking, the key to making it to Machu Picchu in one piece is to take the hiking at your own pace, rest lots and drink plenty of water. The second day, when you climb to 4,300m, is the toughest and most people make it, they just have to walk slowly and rest regularly.

3) It's cheaper to do the Inca Trail independently

It used to be possible to trek the Inca Trail independently and this is how many people visited Machu Picchu in years gone by. Since 2002, the trail has been regulated by the Peruvian authorities who issue permits through licensed agents. The terms and conditions of the permits mean that you have to trek with a guide and porters. There are strict checks along the way to ensure that all trekkers have permits.

4) It's cheaper to buy your permits online

Whilst it is possible to purchase your Inca Trail trek or holiday online, permits can only be obtained by authorised agents located in Peru. To be able to do this, they need to take your passport details and a deposit. The local government agency issues 500 permits each day and you can check availability of these on the official government website.

5) Porters are all poorly treated

Whilst historically, porters were badly treated and under-paid, there is much more awareness amongst traveller about responsible travel, ensuring that porters' well-being has moved into many trekkers' consciousness. That said, price competition has meant that all aspects of service on the trails continue to be squeezed, including wages. You can help to support porter welfare by making sure you only book your trek through a reputable operator who provides porters with correct footwear and proper food. You can also supplement wages by tipping them at the end of the trek.

A visit to the Galapagos Islands is a trip of a lifetime, the dream of millions who have seen the Galapagos on television or in the IMAX theater. The fearless animals, the clear blue water, the sandy beaches and the fascinating natural history of Galapagos draw visitors from around the world. Yet, when they go to book, often they're dismayed to learn that their Galapagos dream vacation will cost more than they had thought. It's a common question put to tour agencies around the world: Why is it so expensive to visit the Galapagos Islands?

There are several answers to that question: here are some of the most important factors in the relatively high cost of a visit to the islands.

They're Very Remote

This is probably the top factor in the cost of the islands. They're terribly isolated: they were unknown to mankind before their accidental discovery in 1535. They weren't even considered worth settling for another three hundred years or so.

To reach the islands, you need to fly: they are three days by ship from the mainland and in any event there is no passenger service by sea. The flight from Ecuador is currently about $350 round trip: add in a flight from wherever you are to Quito or Guayaquil and you're looking at a lot of money just in airfare.

The remoteness of Galapagos does not only affect visitors flying back and forth: many things needed in the islands must be flown or shipped there as well. The only industries on the islands are tourism, fishing and agriculture: everything else, from electronics to bed linens, from construction materials to silverware must be shipped. It's expensive, and hotels pass the cost on to visitors.

Galapagos Regulations

The Galapagos Islands are a very special place, and the Ecuadorian government has taken steps to insure they're protected forever. This means a cost for visitors, however. The most obvious manifestation of this cost is the $100 park entry fee for visitors, which goes to support the park and conservation efforts.

Also, there is a long list of things that are not permitted in the Galapagos Islands, including several species of fruits and vegetables: it is feared they could take root and spread if brought into the islands. Therefore, many tour operators rely on local produce, which can be more expensive due to high demand and low supply.

Another Galapagos regulation is designed to help the residents of the Islands find work. In Galapagos, you are not allowed to hire someone from abroad or even from mainland Ecuador if there is someone from Galapagos who is qualified to do the work. Therefore, the whole workforce, including everyone from dishwashers to waiters to crewmen and guides, must be from Galapagos. Because there are a limited number of islanders looking for work, labor has become quite expensive.

Is it Really so Expensive?

A quick comparison with other "dream vacations" shows that Galapagos is perhaps not as expensive as you may think. A trip to Antarctica including cruise, hotels and airfare costs at least twice as much as Galapagos. An African Safari is also expensive: a mid-range accommodation will cost some $400/night, in addition to airfare, park fees, etc. This is comparable to an elegant cruise ship in Galapagos. A day of sightseeing, a nice dinner and a decent hotel room in Rome will cost over $100 and may approach the $175/day or so that the most economic of Galapagos cruises cost.

Kayaking in Ba Be Lake

Ba Be Lake (literately means three lakes) is the largest natural lake in Vietnam. It's a highlight point that tourists can't miss on Vietnam tours. Ba Be Lake is located in the middle of limestone, in Nam Mau commune, Bac Kan district, BacKan province, in the northeastern region in Vietnam tours' traveling map. With the good road condition, it only takes about a 5.5 hour drive from Hanoi to get there. Due to its special geological constitution, the lake has very original unique features compared with other worldwide caster lakes. Caster lakes are empty or only with one season of water, while Ba Be Lake has full water year round. Ba Be Lake is considered the "Green Gem" in Vietnam. That's why so many Vietnam tours make Ba Be Lake as "must-go" point for northern adventures in sightseeing, trekking, but most of all, kayaking.

Starting from Hanoi, we got to the Bac Kan district in northeastern Vietnam in late afternoon. Hence, we decided to stay one night at Pac Ngoi village - a traditional village of Tay people, and started our kayak trip early the next morning. Pac Ngoi village has around 40 traditional houses located right beside fields and the river edge. Staying in the house, we can listen to the rhythm of the Nang river right beside the house and smell all the fresh air. The starting point in the kayak trip is Buoc Lom wharf which is far from Ba Be Lake, around a 10km paddle. Continuing to paddle along the spring, we were surprised by the beauty of the limestone surrounding. Kayaking for around 40 minutes, we passed through the Puong Cave. The Nang River through limestone, Lung Nham created Puong caves with stalactites 300 meters long and 30 meters high, with thousands of different shapes that look so magical and shimmering. We kept paddling for around one and a half hours, then we took a short break at Pirate restaurant. The name of the restaurant was named after the owner's nickname. The owner of Pirate restaurant played the role of a pirate in a French movie, where his nickname came from. After finishing our lunch and taking a rest, we walked down to the falls. Dau Dang Fall, the 100m, three-level waterfall makes the scenery even more magnificent. After coming back to our canoes, it took us about 40 minutes to get to Ba Be Lake.

Ba Be Lake was formed approximately 200 million years ago; the lake is surrounded by limestone cliffs which in turn are covered by primary forest. Ba Be Lake spreads over 8km; the widest point is over 3km and 150m above sea level. It is a challenge even for experienced kayakers. The Ba Be Lake combines three natural elements: water, trees and mountains. Even if you've experience other Vietnam tours, you will hardly find a place where those three factors blend so well and beautifully. The lake comprises three zones named Pe Lam, Pe Lu and Pe Leng. Only kayaking through these islands, can you feel all of its beauty. The most convenient starting point is Pe Lam Lake. Kayaking around Pe Lam Lake, I could see in the middle of the lake there is an island and in the middle of the island is another small lake the locals call Ao Tien (Fairy Pond). As its name, Ao Tien Lake has a pure beauty that can't be compared with any other lake in tours all throughout Vietnam. Although normally, the lake only has one full-water season, Ao Tien is always full of pure water. The beauty of Ao Tien totally cleared my mind and left me refreshed. Paddling slowly to enjoy all the beauty of Ao Tien, I return from my journey and leave Pe Lam. The next destination is Pe Lu Lake and An Ma Island. The name of the island comes from its shape; it looks like a horse wading across the lake. Standing on An Ma Island and taking a far look back to Pe Lam Island, the sunshine sparkling on the surface of water; I deeply understand why people say Ba Be Lake is the most beautiful natural lake in Vietnam.

The last destination is Po Giai Ma (Widow Mound). The Mound is marked with a touching historical vestige with profound meaning about humanity and love. The story is about a widow, with her humane and upright actions, saved all of the villages from a terrible flood which was believed to have created Ba Be Lake. The name of the island was named after her. That can be considered as a characteristic of Vietnam tours - it's hard to find a tourist destination in Vietnam not marked with a historical vestige.

A complex of lakes, rivers, streams, mountains and caves have kept Ba Be Lake at an average temperature of 22°Cyear round. Here, it's warm in winter, cool in summer, and very suitable for an ideal getaway excursion in all four seasons. Through all of Vietnam's tours, there are not many places with an ideal temperature like this. Ba Be Lake is rated as the top 20 most beautiful lakes in the world by UNESCO, therefore, if you plan to visit Vietnam, Ba Be Lake will be one of many excellent choices you can pick on your next Vietnam tour.

Experience Sapa

Picturesque green valleys, terraced hill sides and tribes still following their ancient traditions - welcome to Sapa.

Located 350kms north-west of Hanoi, just shy of the Chinese border is the Lao Cai Province where you will discover Sapa. Its surroundings and impressive landscape are on the lower slopes of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, which also boasts Vietnam's highest mountain Fansipan, with a height of 3142 metres.

Sapa is populated by a diverse group of ethnic minorities such as the Hmong, Yao, Tay and Giay groups. Thought to have inhabited the area since the 1800's, these Sapa hill tribes are still around today continuing their way of life and traditions as they have done for centuries.

The weather is very seasonal, during the summer it's quite moderate and rainy. During the winter it can be cold, misty and even get the odd snowfall. Recommended times to travel are March through May and mid September to early December to get a warmer and clearer experience.

Organising your travel to Sapa in advance through a travel specialist is advised. The best way to get to Sapa is by overnight train, where travellers can sleep the journey away. From Hanoi the journey takes approximately 10 hours and the trains depart daily. There are fourteen trains that provide the return journey between Hanoi and Lao Cai, all providing air-conditioning and comfortable cabins with multiple berth options. You'll wake up refreshed and ready for your Sapa adventure to begin when you arrive into Lao Cai early the next morning.

Put your walking shoes on and explore the valleys offering breathless scenery leading you to local villages. The nearest village of Cat Cat is only 3kms from Sapa, another option is Ta Phin village home to Red Dzao approximately 10kms away. Most travellers seek a guide and take a Xe Om (motorbike) to a starting point 8kms from Sapa, then trek a 14km loop around the area visiting villages along the way. There are many hiking and trekking options in the area for all fitness levels, visiting hill tribe villages and waterfalls. For the serious mountaineer why not take on the 19km journey to the pinnacle of Fansipan, Vietnam's highest peak.

Another attraction of any Sapa trip is the markets. There are multiple markets held around the area generally on the weekend on either a Saturday or Sunday. A famous market is the Bac Ha Sunday market, which is a trading centre and meeting place for friends and family. You will find the local minorities wearing their traditional garments, the Hmong are identified by their indigo embroidered garb and the Red Dao by their red headdresses with dangling coins and waistcoats that are intricately embroidered and worn by the women. The Love Market is another famed market - traditionally it was a place where the youths of the local hill tribes would come to find a mate.

When you have met the locals, trekked the valleys and marvelled the views of dramatically terraced rice fields, shopped at the markets and have your treasured moments captured, you will head back to Lao Cai station for your overnight train back to Hanoi. A Sapa travel adventure is a definite highlight of any trip to Vietnam.

Nasca Aqueducts - 2000 Year Old Aqueducts of the Nazca Valley

Approximately 15 minutes outside Nazca are the Cantalloc Aqueducts. This unique system was built to tap underground water within the Nazca Valley. The aqueducts are an impressive feat of hydraulic engineering where the ground has been excavated with horizontal trenches and tunnels to reach subterranean aquifers that hold water deep below and bringing it to ground level.

The aqueducts consist of tunnels, wells and trenches which are collectively known as Puquios (Quencha name for spring) range in length from a few meters to over 370 meters (1/2 mile). At present 36 puquios function in these three valleys, 29 of which are in the Nazca Valley; in the past it is thought there were more than 50 puquios in the area.

The Nazca Valley is one of the driest places on earth receiving approximately 1 inch of rain per year. The water flow of the main river, the Rio Grande has not been enough to sustain the population of the Nazca region either in the past or present especially during times of drought. The puquios solved this problem and have allowed a constant supply of water to the inhabitants of the region. Built by the Nazca Culture (the same people who created the Nazca Lines) who inhabited the region between 100 - 800 AD, the puquios construction is dates back to the 6th century which coincides with two prolonged droughts.

Each puquios is typically made up of several parts including a horizontal tunnel or "gallery" which is excavated laterally until it meets with the underground aquifers. The walls of the gallery are lined with river stones set without motor to allow water to filter into the gallery. The roof is constructed of stone slabs or from wooden logs (logs would be replaced at regular intervals). The ojo or opening of the well is in a circular shape at the top measuring 15 meters across while near the water only 1 - 2 meters. The unique shape allowed ease of access to the water thus serving as a local well. The smaller opening protected the water from debris. The ojo also allowed access to the puquios for yearly maintenance, as well as allowing air and light inside for the workers.

Historically the puquios have been the most consistent supply of fresh water to the region. Some puquios were constructed to capture the subterranean waters from the Rio Grande which flows east-west through the valley. While other puquios were constructed to capture north-south flowing water which research shows as water being transported via earthquake faults.

Water flows down the mountains from higher elevations following rivers and streams until the water reaches a crack in the bedrock caused by a fault. The fault acts as a natural aquifer, trapping the water and redirecting into the valley most with a north-south flow. The Nazca Valley is located at the near the intersection of a series of faults, ones running north-south and others east-west; the faults intersect at Cerro Blanco (the largest sand dune in the world) just east of the city.

Local legends historically link Cerro Blanco and water. In one legend Cerro Blanco is said to have erupted and spewed water from its summit and became a "volcano of water".

Another legend tells of the people enduring a long drought. The local people went to Cerro Blanco, which was their main place of worship and the place where they spoke to the gods. Viracocha (the Inca creator god) descended from the sky and heard the weeping of the people. Tears came from his eyes, ran down Cerro Blanco, and penetrated the earth, thereby being the origin of the underground aqueducts. These early legends may have been due to the amount of water being transported by the faults under Cerro Blanco.

In recent years, there have been theories regarding the relationship between the puquios and the Nazca Lines. While studying the puquios, teacher David Johnson noted that he could follow these mystical lines to find water sources. Johnson further noted that the trapezoid figures indicate the broadness of the water stream, zigzag lines show where the water ends, he summarized that the lines show into direction of the puquios. While Johnson's theory may not be 100% accurate many scientists now agree that one of the purposes for the creating the Nazca Lines was to mark water sources within the valley and thus it would be natural to assume a relationship between the puquios and the lines.

The puquios have allowed the Nazca desert to become fertile farm land capable of supporting large populations over the centuries. In additional to the Nazca people who created the aqueducts the puquios have been used by those who subsequently came to the region including the Huari, Inca, Spanish as well as the continued use of this water system by those living in the Nazca Valley today.
